micro-manager and 100X

micro-manager is an Open Source platform for automated imaging in Life Sciences and general microscopy. 100X Imaging supports and actively contributes to the micro-manager project, based at the Vale Laboratory at the UCSF and funded by the NIH.

Micro-Manager began in summer 2005, with a grant from the Sandler Foundation awarded to Ron Vale and Nico Stuurman. The idea was to build a completely new, flexible and open software for image acquisition. Nenad Amodaj, also inspired by developing a new approach to microscopy software, decided to leave his job with Molecular Devices to join the Micro-Manager project.

One year later, the micro-manager.org Web site was launched with a first public beta version. Micro-Manager was well-received by the scientific community upon its inaugural presentation at the 2006 ASCB meeting and in the Physiology Course at Woods Hole. Official version 1.0 followed in March 2007, and since then the number of Micro-Manager users world-wide is growing at a steady pace.

micro-manager.org continues to thrive in the Vale Lab, now supported by a NIH grant and remaining true to its original moto “Open, Powerful and Free!”. 100X now proceeds beyond the practical boundaries of a publicly funded project. In this same spirit of openness and flexibility, 100X builds advanced automated imaging systems for high-content screening, core facilities, and custom applications. We provide complete solutions based upon custom needs, including hardware integration, configuration, data management, automated analysis, all based on open Micro-Manager platform.
